On the 1st September 2005, one of the great "characters" of the C.M.C.C. was tragically taken from us following a racing accident on the Isle Of Man. John Bourke, better known as "Bourkey" to all his friends joined the C.M.C.C. in 1998 and quickly established himself as a most respected and popular member due to his unique sense of humour, strong opinions and ultra competent skills aboard a bike. In life Bourkey excelled at anything he ever put his hand to, a gifted musician, school teacher, qualified helicopter pilot and computer programmer. There was no boundary to his intelligence or determination! This determination would see him re-cover from a horrific road bike accident in 1999 to live his ultimate dream and become a road racer. In paticular race the famous mountain circut of 37 and 3/4 miles on the Isle Of Man. Following a very successful campaign on the Irish road race scene in 2003/2004 Bourkey headed to the 2004 Manx Grand Prix to contest the 600/750cc newcomers race and the result was astonishing, not only did he break the 105mph lap but also won a coveted "Silver Replica" for finishing 14th of 78 starters. This was the greatest moment of his life! Sadly, almost one year to the day later, Bourkey was to lose his life whilst competing in his second Manx Grand Prix. A beautiful plaque now exists in his memory on the Isle Of Man, The place that meant more to him than anywhere else in the world. He is sorely missed by everyone who ever knew him. Especially close friends, family and long-term partner and soulmate Anno!
In memory of John Bourke by Rossi
Gone but not forgotten
Forever in our dreams
Every Sunday the sun shines for you
The bends are as you dream
You will be there at every party
You will take part in every race
You will stand there on the podium
You will race with all the stars
And if Angels ride on R1's
Then you will surely travel far
On Earth You were My Friend
And now you are a Star
so glide on heavens highway
And lead the train up front
One day you will be waiting with
Martin and together we will ride
Once more again as Friends
The white line side by side
Bourkey #45
